La fiecare popas li se mai alatura cate un trib care, ca si ei, fusesera atacati de vanatorii de sclavi. Astfel, micul grup al lui D'Leh se transforma treptat intr-o adevarata armata. Calatoria lor este presarata cu numeroase pericole, eroii nostri trebuind sa infrunte monstri preistorici si fenomene naturale infricosatoare, iar la sfarsitul ei descopera un taram dicolo de orice imaginatie, pe care piramide fabuloase se inalta pana la cer. Aici ei vor trebui sa infrunte un zeu tiranic, iar D’Leh va intelege ca misiunea sa nu consta numai in a o salva pe Evolet, ci de a asigura viitorul intregii civilizatii umane. Tribul Yagahl traieste din vanatoarea de mamuti. “Pentru ei, mamutii reprezinta ceea ce erau odata bizonii pentru indienii din America. Pe de o parte, ii vaneaza pentru hrana, pe de alta parte ii divinizeaza." explica Roland Emmerich. "Cum ne aflam la sfarsitul epocii de gheata, clima incepe sa se schimbe si ei realizeaza ca mamutii nu mai sunt la fel de usor de gasit ca altadata." adauga Harald Kloser. co-scenarist si producator executiv al filmului. Tribul este condus de Tic‘Tic, interpretat de actorul neo-zeelandez Cliff Curtis. "Tic‘Tic este un individ traditionalist, care crede in profetia conform careia intr-o zi, tribul va avea un conducator care il va conduce spre un taram nou, asigurandu-i supravietuirea." spune Curtis despre personajul sau. Nimeni nu crede ca acest conducator va fi D’Leh, deoarece acesta este un outsider, tatal sau abandonand tribul pe vremea cand D’Leh era copil. "In ochii tuturor, acesta este cel mai rusinos lucru pe care-l poate face un barbat, iar D’Leh trebuie sa poarte aceasta povara pe umerii sai. In acelasi timp, desi ii face viata mai grea, acest lucru ii da putere. In cele din urma, D’Leh va descoperi ca tatal sau a avut un motiv intemeiat." comenteaza actorul Steven Strait. Intre D'Leh si Evolet exista o relatie speciala, bazata pe asemanarea situatiilor lor. “Evolet este o orfana pe care membrii tribului o salvasera dupa ce "demonii cu patru picioare" - in realitate, vanatori de sclavi calare pe cai - ii rapisera parintii, impreuna cu tot restul tribului sau. Dragostea lor este reciproca, iar Evolet si-ar dori sa fuga impreuna, dar stie ca acest lucru este imposibil." explica interpreta sa, actrita Camilla Belle. Singurul prieten adevarat al lui D’Leh si Evolet este Baku, interpretat de actorul englez Nathanael Baring, aflat la debutul sau pe marele ecran. “Baku este foarte tanar si incearca din rasputeri sa-i impresioneze pe D’Leh si Tic’Tic pentru a intra in grupul lor. Cu toate bunele intentii, de cele mai multe ori mai mult incurca decat ajuta." spune Baring despre personajul sau. Dupa ce "demonii cu patru picioare" ataca tribul si rapesc mai multi tineri, printre care si pe Evolet, D’Leh porneste in urmarirea lor. Baku, Tic’Tic si rivalul sau Ka’ren (interpretat de Mo Zainal) i se alatura. Ei strabat muntii inzapeziti si ajung intr-o vale stapanita de niste pasari uriase care ii iau drept prada. "Aceste creaturi infricosatoare sunt ceva intre dinozauri si struti, dar vaneaza ca niste crocodili, iesind din adapostul ierburilor inalte in care traiesc pentru a-si ataca prada, retragandu-se apoi in mare viteza." explica Emmerich. In drumul lor, vanatorii de mamuti descopera un alt trib, Naku, condus de Nakudu (interpretat de Joel Virgel). Acesta li se alatura, intrucat fiul sau fusese si el rapit de vanatorii de sclavi. Destinul ii duce intr-o zona de desert in care se inalta piramide uriase, imperiul unui tiran care se autoproclamase zeu. Pentru a-l invinge si a-si elibera tribul, D’Leh va trebui sa treaca de la statutul de simplu vanator de mamuti la cel de lider care ii fusese predestinat. "Initial, scopul sau este sa o salveze pe iubita sa Evolet. Ulterior, el realizeaza ca trebuie sa-si asume responsabilitatea pentru mult mai mult decat atat." precizeaza Roland Emmerich. "Este extraordinar sa descoperi ca, de-a lungul mileniilor, umanitatea nu s-a schimbat. Elementele definitorii ale conditiei umane - iubirea, compasiunea, solidaritatea, constiinta - au ramas aceleasi din timpuri preistorice. Aceasta idee este foarte importanta in film si orice spectator, din orice epoca, se poate identifica cu personajele." conchide actorul Steven Strait. Pentru filmari, echipa de realizatori si actori s-a deplasat pe mai multe continente, trecand de la briza inghetata de iarna din Noua Zeelanda la caldura umeda din Cape Town, Africa de Sud si desertul arid al Namibiei. Actorii au fost supusi unui antrenament fizic draconic, care a inclus exercitii de lupta, calarie, atletism si catarare in copaci. De asemenea, Steven Strait a trebuit sa slabeasca 13 kg pentru a-l interpreta pe D’Leh. Pentru a transpune pe marele ecran creaturile fantastice pe care le-a imaginat, Roland Emmerich a facut apel la supervizoarea de efecte speciale Karen Goulekas, cu care mai colaborase la Godzilla si The Day After Tomorrow. Sarcina cea mai complicata a fost crearea "menajeriei" preistorice - mamuti, tigri si ciudatele pasari pradatoare. “Problema era ca nimeni nu stie cum se miscau aceste animale, in special mamutii.
